Coca-Cola’s AI Christmas Ads

For decades, Coca-Cola has been more than a soft drink, it’s a cultural institution, particularly during the holiday season. The brand’s Christmas ads are steeped in nostalgia, from the iconic red-and-white Santa Claus, popularised by Coke in the 1930s, to the magical red trucks that traverse snowy towns, delivering holiday cheer.

In 2024, Coca-Cola took a bold step, releasing three AI-generated Christmas ads. The results were widely mocked. Critics and viewers alike described the visuals as uncanny and soulless, a stark departure from the warmth and charm typically associated with the brand. The online backlash was particularly fierce, more so than the reactions to other AI-generated ads released around the same time. Google, for example, also experimented with a fully AI-generated commercial, but the response was comparatively muted.

Fast forward to Christmas 2025, and Coca-Cola has released two more AI-driven ads. This year, the ads feature anthropomorphic animals gazing in rapt admiration at the arrival of the classic red Coca-Cola trucks. The intention is clear: to recreate the magic of the iconic trucks while leaning into AI’s imaginative possibilities. Yet for many, the effect remains jarring. The ads may be technically impressive, but they lack the subtle humanity, the emotional nuance, and the cosy authenticity that made previous campaigns timeless.

Why is Coca-Cola such a lightning rod in the AI advertising debate? The answer lies in nostalgia. Coca-Cola’s Christmas campaigns are part of a shared cultural memory, both in the U.S. and globally. When the ads miss their emotional mark, the reaction feels personal, almost protective. The brand’s holiday messaging is, in many ways, an American institution, and audiences are quick to notice when technology interrupts tradition.

Coca-Cola’s AI experiments raise an important question for marketers: can generative AI ever replace human creativity in campaigns that rely on nostalgia and emotional resonance? Or should AI serve as a supporting tool rather than the primary storyteller? The 2025 ads suggest that, at least for now, the heart of Coca-Cola’s Christmas magic remains in human hands, even as AI continues to play an increasingly visible role in advertising.

One thing is certain: the red trucks still spark joy, even if the AI characters gazing at them don’t quite capture the warmth that generations of viewers have come to expect. For now, tradition and technology continue their delicate dance and the online conversation shows that audiences are watching every step.

The Importance of a Recognised Brand: More Than Just a Logo

When most people think about “branding,” the first image that comes to mind is a logo – the golden arches of McDonald’s, the swoosh of Nike, or the apple of Apple. But true brand recognition runs far deeper than just a symbol. It’s about the full experience: the emotional connection, the sensory cues, and the consistent identity that makes a brand unforgettable.
